Fat-client or fat-server are popular terms in computer literature. These terms serve as vivid descriptions of the type of client/server systems in place. In a fat-client system, more of the processing takes place on the client, like with a file server or database server. Fat-servers place more emphasis on the server and try to minimize the processing done by clients. Examples of fat-servers are transaction, GroupWare, and web
servers. It is also common to hear fat-clients referred to as "2-Tier" systems and fat-servers referred to as "3-Tier" systems.
