A file server, one of the simplest servers, manages requests from clients for files stored on the server’s local disk. A central file server permits groups and users to share and access data in multiple ways. Central file servers are backed up regularly and administrators may implement disk space quotas for each user or group of users.
For example: Using a certain software client, PC users are able to "mount" remote UNIX server file systems. As a result, the remote network file system appears to be a local hard drive on the user's PC.
